Browserextensie

Gratis

Ships in 1.2. The roadmap shows what is built and what is still unchecked on real Macs.

The problem

A browser with dozens of tabs is often the biggest thing on your Mac. Most of those tabs have not been looked at for an hour, but they still hold memory, and you will not close them because you might need them.

Browsers can put a tab to sleep and reload it when you click it. The browser companion does that for tabs you have not touched in a while, shows how much memory the browser is using, and, when linked to the Mac app, records what the sleep gave back in a receipt.

How it works

  1. Install. Add the extension from your browser's store. The listings go live with launch. It works with Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc and Firefox.
  2. Link. In Hedroom, Tools › Set up browser companion writes a small file into each browser's folder, only after you click, so the extension can talk to the app. Uninstall removes it.
  3. Choose when. Tabs idle for 15 minutes, 30 minutes (the default) or 1 hour. Automatic sleep is off until you turn it on. You can also press the button in the popup.
  4. Skip what matters. It does not sleep a tab that is playing audio, pinned, in front of you, a browser page, on your never-sleep list, or (if you turn the form guard on) has typing you have not sent.
  5. Receipt. After tabs sleep, Hedroom compares the whole browser's memory before and after and marks the result as an estimate.

What you will see

The popup is titled "hedroom · tab sleep" and shows whether it is linked to the Mac app. A dark card reads, for example, "This browser is using ~2.6 GB", marked as an estimate, then the number of tabs open and idle, and a button such as "Sleep 14 idle tabs". After sleeping, the button becomes "Wake all tabs". Below it are your tabs with their state: idle, playing audio, pinned, asleep. There is no memory number per tab.

In the Mac app, the tab-sleep receipt shows the browser's memory before and after. Automatic sleeps are combined: one receipt per browser per 15 minutes, and only when 3 or more tabs slept.

A worked example

Example, not real data

A research afternoon

Say your browser has 22 tabs open and 14 have been idle for over 30 minutes, including a few you meant to read. You press "Sleep 14 idle tabs". The tab playing music, the pinned ones and the one in front stay as they are.

A slept tab keeps its place in the tab bar and reloads when you click it. Hedroom's receipt compares the browser's memory a few minutes before and after. It is an estimate for the whole browser, not for each tab, and if little memory came back, it says so.

Details and limits

What it will not do

  • Tabbladtitels of URL's ergens naartoe sturen.

Questions people ask

Does it see or send my tabs or browsing history?

The extension reads tab titles and states to draw its popup, and they stay inside the popup. It makes no network requests at all. The message format between the extension and the Mac app has no field for a URL, a title, a host name or a tab, and a test fails if one is added.

What permissions does it ask for?

At install it has no access to the pages you visit. If you turn on the form guard, it asks for permission to run in pages, and then reports one yes or no per tab. It never reads what you typed.

Will I lose something I was typing?

Not if you turn the form guard on: a tab with unsent typing is never slept. Without it, protection relies on the browser's own rules, so a half-written form may not survive a reload.

Does it need the Mac app?

Sleeping tabs works on its own. Linking to Hedroom adds the whole-browser memory figure and the receipt. When Hedroom is not open, the popup says "Open Hedroom to link".
