Requirements

System requirements

Hedroom runs on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 15 Sequoia or later. A few features need a MacBook Pro or an approval in System Settings, and this page lists which.

The basics

M1+

Apple Silicon, any M-series chip. Hedroom is arm64 only.

15

macOS 15 Sequoia or later.

1, 2, 5

Macs per plan, your choice. Hedroom itself has no account.

EN

English. Other languages are planned, not built.

Hedroom is not sandboxed and not on the Mac App Store, because the sandbox does not allow the features that matter. See security.

Compatibility

Where Hedroom is supported, and where it has been tested so far.
Mac or macOSSupportedTested so far
Apple Silicon, macOS 15 or laterYesOne MacBook Pro (M3 Pro, 18 GB) on macOS 27.0. Runs on macOS 15 and 26, and on 8 GB and 16 GB Macs, are planned before launch.
Apple Silicon, macOS 14 or earlierNoNot tested.
Intel MacsNoNot built for. The measurements and fixes rely on how Apple Silicon handles memory and cores.
MacBook ProYes, including fan curvesFan control runs against a fake in tests. It is not yet verified on a signed build.
MacBook Air, Mac mini, iMac, Mac StudioYes, without fan curvesNot yet tested on these models.

Requirements by feature

What each feature needs beyond a supported Mac. Source: the features pages.
FeatureNeedsApproval or permissionGood to know
Diagnosis, fixes, receipts, rulesApple Silicon, macOS 15 Sequoia or later.None. Runs as a normal app, with no admin password.Fixes act only on apps you own and never on Apple's own processes.
Storage scan and cleanupNothing extra.Full Disk Access, only for iPhone and iPad backups and Mail downloads.Without it those rows say "Needs Full Disk Access" and everything else works. Hedroom never asks during setup.
Startup itemsItems in your own LaunchAgents folder can be switched.None for your own items. Items in /Library/LaunchAgents open Login Items in System Settings.Items in /Library/LaunchDaemons are listed and cannot be switched yet. Items apps added in Login Items are not listed.
Display advisorA connected display. Try it changes one display's mode.No extra permission. The old mode returns after 15 seconds unless you press Keep, and after a log out. If WindowServer cannot be read, it says "Unavailable".
Energy per appA Mac that reports power channels.None.Not every Mac reports every channel. Hedroom shows what it can read and marks estimates.
Power profiles, battery healthA Mac with a battery for battery health.None. Fan speed within a profile needs the helper.Hedroom does not change Low Power Mode or Optimized Charging.
Fan curvesMacBook Pro only.Helper, approved in System Settings › General › Login Items.A MacBook Air has no fans. Other Macs keep fans on automatic. Fans return to automatic when Hedroom quits.
Local AI headroom: fit checkNothing extra. Hedroom estimates; it does not run a model.None.The estimate can be off by about 15%.
Local AI headroom: GPU memory limitNot offered on 16 GB or 24 GB Macs, where it would give no more than macOS already allows the GPU.Helper, approved in System Settings.Never leaves macOS less than 8 GB. Lasts until you restart.
Browser companionChrome, Edge, Brave, Arc or Firefox. Not Safari. You click Set up browser companion in Tools. The extension comes from the browser's store.Store listings go live with launch. It shows whole-browser memory, not per-tab memory.
Weekly reportNothing extra.Notifications are optional and can be turned off in Settings.Made on your Mac from your own readings.

The helper is a small program with admin rights. Almost nothing needs it. How it is limited: security. How to approve it.

What Hedroom itself costs

A tool that diagnoses a slow Mac must not slow it. Our budget is an average of under 0.5% of one core and under 80 MB of memory. The numbers below are measurements on one Mac: a MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro and 18 GB, macOS 27.0, using a Release build signed ad hoc. They are not a promise for your Mac.

Measured Hedroom overhead on one M3 Pro Mac.

Windows closed, 5 s sampling, 30 minutes0.27% of one core. Memory median 29.2 MB, highest 31.7 MB.Under 0.3% and under 80 MB2026-10-13
Windows closed, 2 s sampling (Mac under memory pressure)0.69%No budget. Sampling speeds up when pressure rises.2026-10-13

First run, 10 minutesMean 2.6%, median 0.9%. Memory up to 74 MB. The first storage scan is real work and takes a few minutes.Under 1.5% and under 80 MB2026-10-15

What is not measured yet

  • Other screens with the window open (Memory, CPU, Rules and so on) ran 1.0% to 4.1% over 30 seconds on an intermediate build, and have not been re-measured on the final one. Some of those figures are above the 1.5% budget.
  • Disk growth of Hedroom's own database (budget: under 150 MB a year) is not measured.
  • The Mac was under memory pressure for much of the 2026-10-13 run, so part of it used the faster 2 s sampling. The 0.27% figure rests on 11.5 minutes of 5 s sampling inside a 30-minute run.
  • No 8 GB or 16 GB Mac, and no M1 or M2, has been measured yet.

You can see Hedroom's own use in Settings. If it is higher on your Mac, tell us: contact.

Not supported

  • Intel Macs. There is no Intel build.
  • macOS 14 and earlier. The minimum is macOS 15 Sequoia.
  • Safari. The browser companion cannot put Safari tabs to sleep, because Safari extensions cannot do it.
  • The Mac App Store. There is no App Store edition yet. One is under evaluation. See the roadmap.
  • Fan control on anything but a MacBook Pro.
  • Languages other than English.
