Ships in 1.3. The roadmap shows what is built and what is still unchecked on real Macs.

The problem

On battery, a few background apps decide how long the day lasts: a sync client busy in the background, an updater that wakes at a bad moment, Docker left running. And when a MacBook Pro gets loud, you cannot see why or choose how it should respond.

Power & fans bundles the gentle fixes into three profiles you can read, shows battery health and fan speeds, and on a MacBook Pro lets you pick a fan curve, with the fans handed back to macOS whenever anything looks wrong.

How it works

  1. Pick a profile. All-day battery moves sync apps and updaters to the efficiency cores and, when Docker is idle, asks before pausing it. Balanced adds nothing. Full speed adds no slowdowns and uses the Cooler fan curve if fan control is on.
  2. Read the rules. A profile is a bundle of ordinary rules. They show in Rules, go through the same safety checks and get their own receipts. Low Power Mode stays your switch.
  3. Optionally switch by itself. After you agree once, Hedroom changes profile when you plug in or unplug, once the power source has stayed put for 10 seconds.
  4. Choose a fan curve (MacBook Pro). Quiet, Automatic, Cooler or Max, or your own 2 to 5 points. Starting one needs Hedroom's small helper, which asks for your approval in System Settings the first time.
  5. Hand the fans back. Every 2 seconds the loop reads the temperature and sets targets inside each fan's own limits. It returns the fans to automatic when you press Stop, when Hedroom quits, when the Mac sleeps, on any error, and when macOS reports a serious or critical thermal state.

What you will see

Three profile cards, the active one highlighted, with a footnote such as "Turns on 3 rules" or, while on, macOS's own estimate of time left. Below them, the fan card: preset buttons, a chart of your curve against an illustration of Apple's automatic one, and Start and Stop. A live tile shows fan speed and the die temperature, which on Apple silicon is usually one reading that Hedroom labels CPU. A battery health card shows capacity, cycles against rated cycles, and whether macOS Optimized Charging is holding the charge.

On a MacBook Air, or any Mac without fans, the fan section says "This Mac has no fans" and does not ask for the helper. On other Macs with fans it says fan curves are for MacBook Pro. If the helper is not approved yet, a card explains how to approve it.

A worked example

Example, not real data

Before a long day away from the charger

Say you pick All-day battery in the morning. Hedroom turns on its rules: sync clients that use lots of CPU in the background move to the efficiency cores, updaters on battery go there too, and when Docker is idle Hedroom asks before pausing it. Hedroom only pauses an app on its own when its library marks that app safe to pause. You can read each one in Rules.

As the day goes on, each time a rule acts it writes a receipt with the measured change in that app's watts or CPU. Hedroom does not predict how many hours you will gain: the card shows macOS's own estimate and the receipts show what the rules measured. If a rule does nothing for you, the usual "not helping" flag appears after three receipts.

Details and limits

Ce qu’il fait

  • Propose trois profils.

What it will not do

The reason: reading your Mac changes nothing, while a profile or a fan curve changes how it behaves.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to control the fans?

Hedroom never sets a speed outside the fan's own minimum and maximum, and never drives the fans until you press Start. It gives them back to macOS if the Mac gets hot (a serious or critical thermal state), if anything fails, or if the helper does not hear from Hedroom for 10 seconds.

What is the helper, and why does it need admin rights?

Writing to the fan controller needs root. The helper is a small program inside the Hedroom app. It takes no file paths, runs no programs, and accepts connections only from Hedroom's own signature. It is registered only when you turn on a fan curve or raise the GPU limit, and you approve it in System Settings › General › Login Items. Approving the helper has the steps, and how to undo them.

Will it change Low Power Mode or charging?

No. Low Power Mode stays your switch. Hedroom reads battery health and Optimized Charging and changes neither.

Has fan control been tested on real hardware?

Fan control has been tested against simulated hardware, and the fan readings were checked read-only on one MacBook Pro. Writing to the fans needs a signed, notarized build, so checking it on each MacBook Pro model is a step before release. Hedroom is not released yet.
