The problem
Every app you install gets a chance to start itself when you log in, and many take it: updaters, sync helpers, menu bar extras, agents for apps you removed years ago. They add up to a slower login and memory held all day, and the list is spread across System Settings and folders you never open.
You cannot tell from the names which ones you use. Hedroom lists them with who made them and why they start, shows what each costs in memory, and suggests turning off only the ones its own data says you do not use.
How it works
- List. Hedroom reads the launch agents and daemons in your own LaunchAgents folder and in /Library, with no admin password. Apple's own items are not listed.
- Explain. Each row shows who signed it, why it starts (it opens itself, it is an updater, it stays running), and its memory five minutes after your last login. Until it has watched a login, the size is a typical one marked "~".
- Suggest, narrowly. An item is suggested only if its program is gone, or you used the app in at most 1 of your last 10 logins. Hedroom suggests nothing until it has watched 10 logins.
- Switch off, reversibly. Turning an item off renames its file so it does not start at your next login. Turning it on puts the name back. Nothing is deleted, and an app that is running is left running.
- Measure. At your next login Hedroom reads the same apps five minutes in and writes a receipt. It claims a drop only if every earlier login was clearly higher.
What you will see
The Startup items screen reads "Starts with your Mac", with the number of items. Each row has a letter tile, the name, a tag when one applies (Suggested off, App removed, Unknown signer), "Signed by X · reason", its memory cost and a switch. Items in /Library/LaunchAgents show an Open Login Items button instead of a switch. Items in /Library/LaunchDaemons are listed but cannot be switched yet. Until Hedroom has watched enough logins, the screen says it is still learning and suggests nothing.
"Turn off the suggestions" opens a sheet that lists every item with its own checkbox. Nothing changes until you confirm.
A worked example
Example, not real data
A helper for an app you removed
Say the list shows a launch agent tagged App removed: its program no longer exists, so it starts nothing, but its file still sits in your LaunchAgents folder. Hedroom suggests turning it off.
You switch it off. The file is renamed, not deleted, and one click turns it back on. Because nothing was running from it, the receipt at your next login says so: no data, no effect. Removing a dead entry tidies the list. It does not make your Mac faster, and Hedroom does not pretend it does.
Details and limits
What it will not do
Limits
对于 /Library/LaunchAgents 中的项目,它会打开“系统设置”中的“登录项”。/Library/LaunchDaemons 中的项目会被列出,但目前还不能切换。
Pro
The reason: seeing the list changes nothing, while a switch changes what starts on your Mac.
Questions people ask
Does turning an item off delete it?
No. Hedroom renames the file so it does not start, and turning it on puts the name back. If you uninstall Hedroom, the renamed files stay where they are, and the uninstall dialog lists them by name with how to turn them back on.
Could turning something off break an app?
An app can lose a helper that starts at login, such as an updater or sync agent, until you turn it back on. That is why Hedroom never suggests background-only apps, backup apps, sync apps or apps it has never seen run, and why you can simply leave anything you are unsure about switched on.
Why is an item I know about missing?
Apple's own items are hidden. Apps that added themselves in System Settings › Login Items cannot be listed without admin rights, so the screen links you to Login Items for those.
How does it know which apps I use?
It notes, on this Mac, which apps were in front during the first hour of each login. That history stays in Hedroom's local database.
