Uninstall Hedroom

Hedroom can remove itself. It first puts back everything it changed, then deletes its own data and moves the app to the Trash. You confirm it first.

These steps describe Hedroom 1.0. The app is not released yet, so there is no public build to uninstall today.

1. Cancel your subscription, then decide about your license

Uninstalling Hedroom does not cancel your subscription. If you are done with Pro, cancel first on Manage your subscription with your license key, or it renews. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and Pro keeps working until the period you paid for ends. If you cancel before the free trial ends, you pay nothing.

A license works on as many Macs as your plan covers. If you are leaving this Mac for good, free its slot so another Mac can use it. There are two ways, and the second is the default. Deactivating and moving share a limit of 5 a day for each license key.

  • In Settings, before uninstalling: press Deactivate this Mac on the license card and confirm. "This Mac goes back to the Free features and the seat becomes free for another Mac."
  • In the Uninstall dialog: leave Keep my license on this Mac unticked. The checklist then shows "Your license on this Mac: Frees this Mac's slot. You can activate it again with your key."

If you will reinstall on this Mac soon, tick Keep my license on this Mac. "Your license stays on this Mac." If there is no internet connection when the slot is freed, Hedroom tells you: the key is gone from this Mac, and you can move it from another Mac later. See Move your license.

2. Use Uninstall in Settings

  1. Open Hedroom's Settings.
  2. Press Uninstall Hedroom… (the red button next to About Hedroom and Replay the welcome tour).
  3. The dialog asks "Remove Hedroom completely?" and says "Hedroom first puts back everything it changed, then removes itself." If any apps are paused, it resumes them first ("Put back first").
  4. Read the checklist. Press Uninstall, or Cancel to stop.
  5. Hedroom shows "Hedroom is gone." and "Everything it changed is back the way it was." Press Quit Hedroom if it is still open.

What it removes

The Uninstall checklist
ItemWhat it is
The Hedroom appMoved to the Trash.
Your historyThe database of samples, rules and receipts.
Process library cacheDownloaded updates to the library of app explanations.
Recovery journalsNotes Hedroom keeps so it can undo a fix after a crash.
Settings and cachesPreferences and temporary files in your Library folder.
Browser companion connectionThe small file that lets your browser talk to Hedroom. Listed only if it exists.
Hedroom's helperFans go back to automatic first, then it is removed from Login Items. Listed only if the helper was set up.
Open at loginRemoved from Login Items.
Your license on this MacFrees this Mac's slot, unless you chose to keep it.

Every deletion needs your confirmation of that exact list. The Uninstall button is that confirmation.

The helper

The helper that handles fan curves and the GPU limit lives inside the Hedroom app, and nothing is installed into the system's Library folders. Uninstall hands the fans back to automatic and removes the helper's Login Items entry. Trashing the app removes the helper itself. If Hedroom is still listed afterwards, the dialog says: "Hedroom is still in Login Items. Remove it in System Settings › General › Login Items." More: Approve the helper.

What stays

  • Your subscription. It lives with Stripe and our license server, not on this Mac. It keeps going until you cancel it on Manage your subscription.
  • Startup items you turned off. They stay off. Hedroom renames the file, so nothing was deleted. The dialog lists them by label and says: "Turn them back on in Tools › Startup items first if you'd like them to start again." Do that before uninstalling if you want them back.
  • The browser extension. It lives in your browser. Remove it on your browser's extensions page.
  • Files moved to the Trash by a cleanup. They are in the Trash until you empty it. Uninstalling does not empty it.

Where your data is

Hedroom keeps one database in ~/Library/Application Support/Hedroom/, next to a few small journal files. Settings are in ~/Library/Preferences/app.hedroom.mac.plist. Uninstall removes them. Nothing else about your Mac is stored anywhere but there, and nothing is sent anywhere. See Privacy.

If Uninstall does not finish

  • If it says "Nothing was removed. Close this and choose Uninstall again.", your confirmation had expired (it lasts 5 minutes) or the list changed, so Hedroom removed nothing. Try again.
  • If paused apps could not all be resumed, Hedroom keeps the notes it needs. "Quit Hedroom and open it again: it resumes them on launch. Then uninstall again."
  • If the app could not be moved to the Trash: "Drag Hedroom from Applications to the Trash."
  • If you cannot open Hedroom, drag it from Applications to the Trash yourself. If you also want its data gone, delete the folder named above in Finder. If you can still open Hedroom, deactivate your license in Settings first.
