Why Hedroom shows no fix right now
A healthy Mac has nothing to fix, and "All good." is a real result, not a gap in the app. Hedroom suggests a fix only when a specific, measured condition is met. This page lists those conditions in plain words so you can tell whether it is quiet because things are fine or because it is still learning.
These are the thresholds Hedroom 1.0 is built to use. The app is not released, and the numbers will be tuned during the beta, so they can change before launch.
First, what "All good" means
Today shows "All good." with "Nothing needs you right now" and how often Hedroom is checking. It means memory pressure is healthy, no app is behaving unusually, and nothing else has crossed a line below. It does not mean memory is mostly empty. Using most of your RAM with healthy pressure is normal: macOS keeps cached files in memory on purpose, and Hedroom judges memory by pressure and swap growth, never by "used RAM". See the guides for why.
The conditions behind a fix
| Finding | All of these must be true |
|---|---|
| Memory strained | macOS reports its own warning level, or swap is being written at 20 MB a minute or more for 2 minutes while compressed memory is 20% of RAM or more. Swap that is merely used, with no growth, never counts. |
| Memory critical | macOS reports its critical level, or swap is written at 200 MB a minute or more for 60 seconds, or free plus cached memory is below 3% of RAM for 60 seconds. |
| An app is leaking | It is 3 times its usual size or more, it holds at least 1 GB (or 6% of RAM, whichever is larger), and it has stayed that way for 20 minutes or keeps growing steadily. At 2.5 times it shows as "growing" and nothing more. |
| An app is running away | It is not the app you are using, it has averaged 80% of one core or more for 3 minutes, and that is at least 3 times its own usual background use. |
| Your Mac is hot | macOS reports a "serious" thermal state for 2 minutes. Hedroom then shows the top three CPU users. |
| Storage | A scan finds 10 GB or more that is safe to remove, or free space is under 10% of the disk. |
Hedroom also leaves out apps that are expected to be big or busy: video and audio editors, a Docker virtual machine, compilers, backups and indexing. Apps on your never-touch list, Hedroom itself and macOS's own processes are never offered as a fix target. The only Apple apps that can be relaunched or quit are ones you use yourself, such as Xcode, and only when you click.
Why it can be quiet while your Mac feels slow
- It is still learning. Leak alerts compare an app with its own usual size over the last 7 days. Until Hedroom has about 6 hours of readings, Today says so. Before then it flags only an app that is unusually large (15% of RAM or more) and still growing, and it says "unusually large", not a ratio.
- The cause is not a Hedroom finding. A slow disk, a heavy website, an update installing or a Mac that is simply busy with your own work does not meet the lists above, and Hedroom will not invent a problem.
- It already told you. The same finding for the same app is notified once every 6 hours at most, "Not now" snoozes it for 24, and after three dismissals Hedroom stops notifying for that app. Today still shows it.
- It is a Free-plan Mac. Findings still show. Pressing a fix opens the "Fixes are part of Pro" sheet. See Free vs Pro.
When a fix is shown but refused
If you press a fix and Hedroom declines, it says why next to the button, not in an error alert. The reasons are specific: "You're using it right now", "Slack is on a call", "A backup is running", "You asked Hedroom to never touch Slack" or "Hedroom never touches macOS's own processes". The full list is on How it works and in what Hedroom never touches.
Check your Mac yourself
- Open Memory in Hedroom and read the pressure word. Healthy is the goal. Strained and critical are the states that matter.
- Open Activity Monitor, choose the Memory tab and look at the Memory Pressure graph. It should agree with Hedroom. Green is healthy.
- Open CPU & Energy in Hedroom, or the CPU tab in Activity Monitor, and sort by CPU. Look for one app far above the rest while you are not using it.
- If your Mac feels hot, check the thermal reading, and if you are low on disk space, open Storage and run the scan, which is free.
If this did not work
If memory pressure is strained or critical, or an app is plainly using a huge share, and Hedroom still shows nothing after several hours, write to support with your Mac model, macOS and Hedroom versions, and a screenshot of the Memory screen. Do not send files or a license key. Settings also has a Send feedback button, which sends only what you choose to send.
